Email: jlclark@mednet.ucla.edu

Dr. Clark is Assistant Professor-in-Residence in the Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Disease and Program in Global Health. He is based full time in the Lima, Peru office where his research focuses on new strategies for the control of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in resource-limited settings in Latin America. Prior to joining the Program in Global Health as an Infectious Diseases Fellow in 2005, he studied History and American Civilization at Brown University and Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and completed Internal Medicine Residency at Montefiore Medical Center. Building on previous work addressing patterns of HIV/STI transmission in high-risk populations in urban Peru, his current research focuses on the development of effective, multidisciplinary prevention interventions to limit the spread of HIV and other STIs among men who have sex with men (MSM) in Latin America. He has received a K23 Career Development Award from the NIH/NIMH as well as seed grant funding from the UCLA AIDS Institute, and is a member of the Scientific Review Committee of the NIH/NIAID STI Clinical Trials Group.

Current Research

Partner Management:
Partner notification and expedited treatment as mechanisms for HIV/STI control among MSM in Peru. Specific strategies to be assessed include Internet-based notification systems and patient-delivered partner therapy following STI diagnosis.

Patterns of HIV/STI Transmission in Latin America:
Analysis of behavioral, social, and biomedical patterns of HIV and STI transmission in high-risk populations in urban Peru; network patterns of HIV/STI transmission in urban communities; and bridging networks for HIV transmission in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
