It is our great pleasure to present to you this copy of the UCLA Center for World Health (CWH) 2017-2018 annual report.

The report features the work of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA’s world-class faculty, residents, fellows, and students, who engage in clinical teaching and education and perform groundbreaking research in areas such as infectious diseases, global cancer, global mental health, and global surgery.

UCLA attracts extraordinary minds that strive toward a culture of innovation and are dedicated to strengthening human capital. We have exceptional intellectual capacity and a history of innovation that benefits humankind worldwide. As we work towards our mission of “Transforming health worldwide” through education, research, and capacity building, we also realize that the societal factors and parameters that shape our world are undergoing rapid transformation, shifting from a vertical approach to global health to one favoring true horizontal partnerships.

This shift was also highlighted during our third annual Los Angeles Global Health Conference in February 2018, hosted by CWH around the theme of “Looking In, Looking Out: Balancing Global and Local Priorities in the Current Political Climate”. The conference brought together individuals from diverse disciplines to stimulate dialogue and equip future global health leaders with tools to address health disparities, both in Greater Los Angeles and abroad.

In this report, you will find stories of our institution’s impact on communities in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia, made possible through an unparalleled teaching and learning environment. Our global health professionals and medical students are committed to seeking a healthy, sustainable future for all. They work in close collaboration with our partners around the world to ensure access to high-quality, compassionate, and affordable healthcare.

This report, which covers our 2017-2018 fiscal year, can be found on the CWH website at: http://www.worldhealth.med.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/CWH-17-18-Annual-Report.pdf.
