UCLA AIDS Institute and UCLA Center for AIDS Research (CFAR)

The UCLA AIDS Institute is a multidisciplinary think-tank for top-flight researchers, including faculty who work in the fields of virology, immunology, genetics, oncology, neurology, ophthalmology, epidemiology, social science, public health, nursing, and disease prevention. Their studies are carried out at the UCLA Westwood campus, in community settings, at half a dozen major medical centers in greater Los Angeles, and with partners in Asia, Latin America, and sub-Saharan Africa.

While the AIDS Institute's role is comparatively broad, encompassing everything from education to fund-raising, and reflects the institutional commitment to AIDS research at UCLA, the CFAR's role is intentionally focused: it strongly supports the development of new and novel research approaches by fostering the formation of multidisciplinary collaborations and by making cost-effective, professionally staffed core facilities available to all UCLA AIDS researchers, as a way of providing them with immediate access to state-of-the-art scientific core facilities.

The UCLA Program in Global Health leads the International, Health Services, and Policy Program Area for the AIDS Institute, and is involved in the Developmental Core of the UCLA CFAR. Activities include stimulating research in the areas of international, health services, and policy research; fostering collaborations between UCLA and international investigators; and mentoring young investigators starting careers in international, health services, and policy areas.
