Policy

Middle East and North Africa

In April 2008, the UCLA Program in Global Health, in collaboration with Columbia University, held a think tank meeting, Gender and HIV: Policy Lessons for Low Prevalence Scenarios, at the American University of Cairo. This meeting built on themes discussed in a prior meeting, Behavioral and Social Sciences Research on HIV/AIDS in the Middle East and North Africa, sponsored by OAR, NIMH, and NIAID in Tunis in 2007.

At the Cairo meeting, approximately 40 participants, including significant representation from the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region, attended, including researchers, policymakers, and advocates with expertise in HIV/AIDS, gender, sexual and reproductive health, and related fields. A special issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes presents the findings of this meeting.

A follow-up meeting, MENA Think Tank on Stigma and HIV Prevention, will be held in October 2009 in Rabat, Morocco, and will also address issues of gender and stigma in the MENA region. Its goal will be to stimulate new research ideas and research partnerships on HIv and stigma in the MENA region.
