PolicyHIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)The UCLA Program in Global Health has researched and written about the policy implications of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), an HIV prevention strategy in which one or more antiretroviral drugs are taken prior to potential HIV exposure, in the hope of reducing the likelihood of HIV acquisition. In May 2006, UCLA PGH convened a think tank meeting at the UCLA campus in Los Angeles. Sixty-two leading PrEP researchers, prevention experts, clinicians, and government, pharmaceutical, and community representatives met to review the current PrEP clinical research and formulate policy recommendations for possible implementation of PrEP programs in the United States based on various outcome scenarios of PrEP trials. The meetings recommendations were then published and widely distributed. As a follow-up to this think tank, a one-day PrEP briefing was held with four HIV/AIDS CBOs in California to address their questions about PrEP and lay the foundation for collecting data about their constituents' current knowledge and use of PrEP. PGH has also collaborated with the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition (AVAC) in New York to create PrEP Watch, a Web-based clearinghouse for information on all aspects of PrEP. UCLA PGH remains involved in PrEP policy research and advocacy at the State, national, and international level. UCLA Program in Global Health: PrEP Publications and Resources:
