The UCLA Program in Global Health convened a think tank meeting Business and AIDS in South Africa, June 21-23, 2006 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The meeting brought together 54 representatives from businesses, civil society organizations, and academic institutions in southern Africa, the United States, and Europe.

Its goals were to review available evidence on the epidemiology and impact of HIV/AIDS in the workplace; establish how businesses have responded to HIV/AIDS and document what is known about the efficacy of workplace prevention and care programs; assess the wider role of the private sector in the fight against HIV/AIDS; determine future research needs and how those needs can be met; and to make evidence-based programmatic and policy recommendations to maximize the contributions the business sector can make toward HIV/AIDS prevention and care in South Africa.

The papers in this special issue of the journal AIDS are the result of this think tank meeting.
