Global Health Resident/Fellow Scholars Program

The Global Health Resident/Fellow Scholars Program is a formalized global health curriculum designed to support trainees across departments. Residents may apply beginning in their second year of training, and fellows may apply at any point during fellowship. The program is open to trainees in any department or division at UCLA.

The curriculum includes asynchronous global health didactics, interactive discussions, mentorship, and support for global health clinical or research experiences. It aims to strengthen the UCLA GME global health community.

Please complete the Global Health Resident/Fellow Scholars Program application using the link below. We encourage applicants to apply during their first year of training to ensure sufficient time to complete all program requirements before graduation.

Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Decisions will be communicated by Dr. Hijab Zubairi.

Program Components

Formalized Didactics

  • Asynchronous learning adaptable across departments
  • Opportunities for peer learning and discussion through online platforms
  • GME Professional Development Series
  • Pre-departure training (in-person or asynchronous)

Mentorship and Faculty Support

  • Mentorship and supervision from faculty across departments
  • Support to develop global health partnerships in an equitable manner

Minimum 4-Week International or Specialty-Specific Rotation

  • Ideally completed at a GHP partner site or a site with established faculty partnerships
  • Includes structured debrief and integration with departmental and GME professional development activities

Self-Directed Advocacy Project

  • Project focused on a defined area of interest
  • May include Op-Eds, social media campaigns, quality improvement, or local/international advocacy

Bi-Directional Opportunities

  • Opportunities developed in alignment with shared goals of partner institutions

Program Goals & Objectives​
• Demonstrate knowledge of the epidemiology and global burden of disease within historical, social, political, economic, and environmental contexts
• Identify structural and social determinants of health and apply strategies to improve health equity at individual, community, and societal levels.
• Describe the architecture of global health, compare and contrast health systems in different contexts, and critically evaluate how global actors-- multinational agencies, NGOs, and local government—shape health systems, policies, and the delivery of health care.
• Develop clinical and non-clinical skills for addressing health inequity and improving health outcomes using advocacy, research, and/or public health approaches.
• Employ critical self-reflection in the practice of medicine and demonstrate humility and structural competency in order to collaborate and work effectively with diverse individuals and communities.
