Global Partners
Partnering to advance health beyond our campus and city
The Global Health Program partners with academic institutions, hospitals, health clinics, government agencies, and non-profit organizations worldwide. While every collaboration is unique, each is rooted in a shared belief that partnership should be a model for responsible and sustainable work in medical education, capacity building, health service delivery, and research.
Currently, we have partnerships across Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East, that serve as hosts for our UCLA trainees and where faculty are involved in collaborative projects.
Some of our collaborations include:
Brazil
Pontifícia Universidade Católica Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS)
The original impetus for the DGSOM partnership with PUCRS, which began in 2016, was to better support our Mozambique program with a lusophone partner. The partnership has expanded in focus and we now have a robust trilateral exchange program with training opportunities for learners in each country, along with research collaboration.
Malawi
Partners in Hope (PIH) is a Malawian non-profit and leader in the delivery of high-quality health services in the country, particularly focused on HIV care. PIH and faculty from DGSOM have been partnering since 2006 on a variety of medical education, research, and public health programs, and DGSOM medical students and residents have the opportunity to participate in clinical electives at PIH Medical Center.
Mexico
Refugee Health Alliance (RHA) was formed to address the medical, legal, and structural consequences of displacement on asylum seekers, deportees, and other marginalized populations at the US-Mexico border, and is currently the largest non-governmental free healthcare provider for migrants in Tijuana. DGSOM is involved with RHA in several capacities, including engaging medical students to support the provision of health services across shelters in Tijuana.
Mozambique
Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM), Hospital Central de Maputo (HCM), and Mozambique Ministry of Health (MoH)
In a partnership established in 2007, DGSOM and Partners for Pediatric Progress (P3) work with UEM, HCM, and the MoH to support training programs for Mozambican medical students and residents across various specialties and all regions of the country with an emphasis on child health. The partnership also provides technical assistance to the MoH pediatric HIV and TB programs. UCLA learners participate in clinical rotations and research electives in Mozambique through the partnership’s pediatric clinical research unit.
Peru
Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana (UNAP) and Hospital Regional de Loreto
DGSOM collaborates with the Universidad Nacional de la Amazonía Peruana (UNAP), the primary institution for training medical students in the Peruvian Amazon, and with Hospital Regional de Loreto in Iquitos, Peru, the main public referral hospital for all of the Peruvian Amazon that serves over a million residents. DGSOM engages with these partners to provide support for clinical care and medical education, primarily focusing in the areas of infectious diseases, internal medicine, and pediatrics.
Under the umbrella of DGSOM, Partners for Pediatric Progress (P3) is a non-profit organization that was established to improve the health and survival of children in low-resource settings, and partners with these institutions to provide education and training resources, particularly for specialty pediatric care and pediatric intensive care.
South Africa
University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
The Department of Family Medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) provides family medicine teaching and training, conducts research, and places family medicine registrars (residents) in district and rural hospitals throughout KwaZulu-Natal. DGSOM and the UKZN Department of Family Medicine partner on several initiatives focused on medical education, and have recently initiated partnerships with Mseleni and Emmaus hospitals where DGSOM senior medical students participate in a three-week clinical elective.
Thailand
Mahidol University: Siriraj Hospital and Siriraj Institute of Clinical Research (SICRES)
Siriraj Hospital is a tertiary medical center and teaching hospital with whom DGSOM partners across a range of clinical areas, including bilateral exchange of medical students and post-graduate trainees. In addition to this clinical partnership, DGSOM faculty and students collaborate with Siriraj Institute of Clinical Research (SICRES) on several research initiatives.
