Concentration - DRAFT
Global Health Equity
Our Concentration is a non-competitive program that provides students a flexible opportunity to further explore their interests by completing a mentored global health project and pursuing an optional clinical global health elective in their final year.
The project may involve research, advocacy, quality improvement, or medical education, among other options. Students are free to explore the wide variety of work that UCLA faculty are pursuing in global health and seek mentorship on a specific topic of mutual interest. No travel is required, and the duration of the project is decided by the project mentor and student, but the experience should be substantive and advance the student’s understanding of the field.
Those who meet Concentration criteria will have details of the Concentration achievements noted in their MSPE (Dean’s Letter).

Third-year medical student, Ellis Gao, contributed to an infectious disease-focused case report with her mentor, Dr. Pornpan Koomanchai, at Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand.

Concentration students are required to complete the Fall Selective and the Spring Learning Series. The GHP maintains an active list of UCLA faculty with global health work that students may utilize to explore possible fits for project development.
From the second year forward, students are expected to pursue their project alongside their mentors without substantial oversight from GHP. Faculty mentors will provide a final sign-off to GHP once the project is completed.
Students who have successfully completed a Concentration project will have priority for placement in the final year global health clinical elective.
